February I suppose many will say missing Florence is a big mistake, unless you plan a return trip to Italy. Don't tell people you skipped Florence, most will be agast.
We went to both in Sept. I learned a lot in Florence, after all this is where Europe came out of medevil times.
I was glad my wife was there years earlier so we could pace ourselves with the galleries and museums. I probably would not go back to Florence, but on a return trip to Italy would go back to Bologna because it is a more relaxing place with great food and also many cultural places to see - just great walking around.
My opinion is that Bologna is also a prettier city. Personally, I'd choose Florence over Bologna. It's a beautiful place with a great atmosphere and lots to see - I did enjoy Bolonga and agree that the food is better but found one night enough.
